African Spelling Book

E-mail Print PDF

African Spelling BookCURRENTLY OUT OF STOCK The African Spelling Book is a compilation of twenty 3 minute films made by a group of street children living in Nairobi, Kenya. The film is inspired by stories written by the children. Each story reflects their view of life in Kenya, and gives the viewer a unique chance to explore their world and their point of view. The viewer's preconceived ideas of Africa are challenged by the children's take on life.

Africa is in turn portrayed as tragic, comic, beautiful, vital, but above all, dignified. The African Spelling Book was made with about eighty street boys and girls living in Nairobi's suburbs that were trained in the use of video cameras. Starting from themes chosen by the children using the letters of the alphabet, twenty short films were developed shot and edited by the children themselves with the help of a professional film director and crew. Films within the African Spelling book include: â??Bâ?? for beautyâ?¦ which one girl finds in a local café; â??Fâ?? for father, which explores a turbulent relationship between a family and their patriarch; and â??Tâ?? for tradition which portrays a girl and her elderly grandmother debating female circumcision. African Spelling Book is in turns surprising, funny, sad and insightful.

Big Brother AIDS

E-mail Print PDF

Big Brother AIDSCURRENTLY OUT OF STOCK In 2003 the first continental experiment of Big Brother Africa attracted over 30 million viewers and became the greatest success in the history of African television. While the reality show dominated television and the press in Kampala, Uganda's chaotic and vivacious capital, another realer and more silent big brother roamed the city: the AIDS virus. "We have seen so many people die, relatives, friends, neighbours", says Sanyu Nikinzi, a radio host whose programme is entirely dedicated to AIDS prevention.

Sanyu's brother is Gaetano, one of the contestants in Big Brother, who has incited controversy due to his on screen love affair with his South African competitor in the Big Brother House. "There is no family in Uganda that has not been affected by the virus", agrees Henry, a 23 year old man who is high profile in the national prevention and information campaign. Through the testimonies and personal stories of Henry, Nikinzi and others, Big brother AIDS shows a lively cross- section of the current commitment in Uganda to stop the spread of HIV. It highlights the importance of communication at all levels 'from word of mouth to radio programs and including Big Brother Africa' and of the active participation of local communities in the battle against this virus.

Black Pinocchio

E-mail Print PDF

Black PinocchioMarco Baliani, famous Italian actor, theatre director, and writer, came to Kenya in 2003 with the aim of creating a play developed entirely by Nairobi street children. The documentary describes Balianiâ??s 3 year journey, which culminates with the street children leaving Nairobi to debut their successful play in Europe. Black Pinocchio is the story of the childrenâ??s growth and rehabilitation in the unusual context of the street, and reflects on the difficulties of social interventions, especially given the breakdown of the family and the urbanisation of Africa. The filming takes place over three years, allowing the viewer the luxury of seeing the characters develop and rehabilitate without needing to rely on interviews, explanations or reconstructions.

The characters' daily lives, their actions, and the difficulties they meet along the way are the back-bone of the story. It is an optimistic, poignant story which unravels to reveal the humanity and potential of every street child throughout the world, if they are supported and believed in.

Gulu

E-mail Print PDF

GuluThis one hour film is set in a difficult and little known location, Gulu district in Northern Uganda, on the Sudan border. The filmâ??s narrator and first time visitor to the area, Italian actor Luca Zingaretti, befriends the residents of Gulu who are struggling because they are victims of raids by an army of guerillas rebelling against the official government. These rebels â?? often past victims themselves â?? commit all kinds of atrocities, among them, kidnapping children to enlist to their cause.

In addition to the guerilla warfare and the continuous threat of malaria, the most recent large outbreak of Ebola occurred a year before this film was made. This deadly virus was horrifying enough to persuade the inhabitants to return to their villages and risk being murdered by the rebels. Luca Zingaretti's bittersweet story not only concentrates on the tragic side of Gulu, but also attempts to show the vital strong side of this region and its resilient people.
